2010 Mobile Broadband Rental Review

While a relatively new company, DayPass Wireless enters the mobile broadband rental arena with transparent rates ranging from $4.79 – $9.79 per day while piggybacking on Verizon 3G network.

For that and a couple other reasons, they just became the new gang in town to beat.

How Does DayPassWireless.com Work?

Like most mobile broadband rental companies, DayPass Wireless works in 4 steps:

  1. Order Your Broadband Card
  2. Receive in your mail via courier
  3. Install software, plug in your broadband card, use it
  4. Return it via a prepaid mailing envelope.

Since process doesn’t change much from provider to provider, the major differences come down to the company, how much it costs, the underlying network provider (speed & coverage) and what devices you can get.

How Much Does It Cost?

DayPass Wireless has one of the simplest (& most affordable) rate structures:

1-3 days:
$ 9.79 per day
4-8 days:
$ 8.79 per day
9-12 days:
$ 7.79 per day
13-14 days:
$ 6.79 per day
15-18 days:
$ 5.79 per day
19+ days:
$ 4.79 per day

In addition to this simple layout, they have a a cost calculator readily available for you to figure out how much you’ll be paying before even proceeding to checkout. Naturally, I decided to take it for a whirl and came up with the following costs for 1, 2, 3 & 4 week rentals respectively.

1 Week Rental

2 Week Rental

3 Week Rental

4 Week Rental

With roundtrip shipping via USPS costing $9.90, the rates aren’t bad at all. When ordering, take into account that shipping will take 2-3 days unless expedited (so your broadband card doesn’t arrive just after when you need it). If necessary, overnight shipping is available for just over an extra $20 more.

Word To The Wise

There are a few stipulations. Here are the most important ones:

  • The Rental Period begins at the Start Date at 12:00 PM (noon) and ends at the End Date at 12:00 PM (noon). The customer does not pay rental fees for the transit days of the aircard.
  • If you do not video stream and do not download movies, your allocation is unlimited. If you video stream you will be allocated an average of 165 MB of combined data upload and download for each day of rental.

Speed & Coverage

Since DayPass Wireless relies on Verizon’s mobile broadband network, they also inherit their speed and coverage:

verizon-3g-speed

Verizon 3G speed is second in line right behind AT&T, the "nation’s fastest 3G network". However, they’re a full 20% more reliable than ‘ma bell’.

To top it off, the real world numbers end up being just much as they advertised (600 Kbps – 1.4 Mbps) & then some.

verizon-3g-coverage

Verizon 3G Coverage ties with Sprint for the largest mobile broadband network title.

One study shows the carriers being within 1 percentage point of each other’s reliability.

As always, check your coverage (via the link above) before taking a dip in the mobile broadband pool.
