Sprint Mobile Broadband Cost

TransactionThe Facts

Back when Sprint Mobile Broadband was cool, they had two plans:

1. 40 MB plan for $39.99
2. 'Unlimited' 5 GB plan for $59.99

The 40 MB plan and unlimited plans are no longer available.

Much to the anger of many subscribers (including myself), Sprint capped their unlimited plan at 5 GB, effective, July 13, 2008 for existing customers. It's already in effect for new customers.

QuoteAlltel is now the only carrier left with an unlimited plan.

Compare Sprint, Alltel and other carriers here.

With only a 5 GB plan being available, it leads one to ask the question: "Is 5 Gigabytes enough?"

Let's take a look at a case study. Me:

Internet Use

Time Spent per Day

Streaming music

1-2 hours

Watching videos

30 minutes

Web Surfing

2-3 hours

I called Sprint to find out what my usage was for the past two months to see if I would go over the 5 GB cap. This is what they told me:

February - March

1286 MB/1.26 GB

March - April

1393 MB/1.36 GB

Back then, I didn't use it everyday.

Now I do.

My current usage? About 50 GB/month. So what's the final word then? If you like streaming music while working by the lake, go for the 5 GB plan. It'll run you about $60 per month which is pretty standard among carriers.

This however, may not be enough to find out. To be 100% sure, I urge you to diligently sign up for the Wireless Broadband Exposed E-Course. It's free and the first lesson is a tutorial on how to figure out if 50 MB, 5 GB or unlimited plans are for you.

However, if you plan to use it everyday as your main connection, check out Alltel. They're the only company with an unlimited plan.

Wondering what taxes are like? They're Really, really low. Keep reading to find out why I love mobile broadband taxes.
