While AT&T has slightly better 3G speeds, their coverage is significantly worse than Verizon’s.
What Verizon lacks in speed, they make up for in coverage.
Since AT&T’s speed advantage isn’t that great, it’ll be to your advantage to go with Verizon providing they have 3G coverage in the area of your mobile broadband rental.
As with any mobile broadband purchase or rental, you’ll want to check your coverage before making a final call.
