Verizon Wireless Internet Reliability

The Facts

Verizon Mobile Broadband is run on “America’s Most Reliable Network”.

Just how do they find something like that out anyway?

“Quality testing teams drive approximately 90 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, US and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon US Census counts, to test network performance, call quality, and data network performance on the Verizon Wireless network and the networks of up to seven other wireless carriers”.

“Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3 million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on our network and the networks of other carriers”.

“The data network reliability test results establish that Verizon Wireless has the nation’s most reliable wireless broadband network, allowing Verizon Wireless to set up data sessions and complete large file downloads and uploads at a greater rate of success than its national competitors”.

That’s pretty impressive. At the date of this writing, no wireless carrier has challenged any of their statements.

To back it up further, J.D. Power and Associates reports that “Verizon Wireless ranks highest in overall customer satisfaction for wireless data service (for large enterprise and small/midsize businesses)”.

Every business has it’s marketing point. For Verizon, it’s the reliability of its network. In keeping with that edge, they are planning to acquire the Alltel network and customer base by the end of 2008. It’s been said “expanding the reach of its data network may have been the primary driver for the Alltel acquisition”. The merger would result in an:

“enhanced platform of network coverage, spectrum and customer care to better serve the growing needs of both Alltel and Verizon Wireless customers for reliable basic and advanced broadband wireless services”.
As far as Verizon Wireless Broadband is concerned, that’s even better reliability and customer service on the table.

The Fine Print

The only concern facing Verizon Wireless Broadband reliability is the Alltel merger. This, however, is minor. While some still shudder from the resulting customer service catastrophe of the Sprint-Nextel merger, this unlikely to happen here since Verizon and Alltel use the same technology (CDMA/EVDO).

The only thing that could mess it up (as usual) is the integration of human resources. It sure would be sad to see two companies with excellent reviews on reliability and customer service damage each others’ reputation.
